On the Approximation of Submodular Functions

چکیده
Submodular functions are a fundamental object of study in combinatorial optimization, economics, machine learning, etc. and exhibit a rich combinatorial structure. Many subclasses of submodular functions have also been well studied and these subclasses widely vary in their complexity. Our motivation is to understand the relative complexity of these classes of functions. Towards this, we consider the question of how well can one class of submodular functions be approximated by another (simpler) class of submodular functions. Such approximations naturally allow algorithms designed for the simpler class to be applied to the bigger class of functions. We prove both upper and lower bounds on such approximations. Our main results are: • General submodular functions can be approximated by cut functions of directed graphs to a factor of n/4, which is tight. • General symmetric submodular functions can be approximated by cut functions of undirected graphs to a factor of n− 1, which is tight up to a constant. • Budgeted additive functions can be approximated by coverage functions to a factor of e/(e− 1), which is tight. Here n is the size of the ground set on which the submodular function is defined. We also observe that prior works imply that monotone submodular functions can be approximated by coverage functions with a factor between O( √ n logn) and Ω(n/ log n).

متن کاملInfluence Maximization with ε-Almost Submodular Threshold Functions
Influence maximization is the problem of selecting k nodes in a social network to maximize their influence spread. The problem has been extensively studied but most works focus on the submodular influence diffusion models. In this paper, motivated by empirical evidences, we explore influence maximization in the nonsubmodular regime. In particular, we study the general threshold model in which a...

متن کاملOn the Pipage Rounding Algorithm for Submodular Function Maximization - a View from Discrete Convex Analysis
We consider the problem of maximizing a nondecreasing submodular set function under a matroid constraint. Recently, Calinescu et al. (2007) proposed an elegant framework for the approximation of this problem, which is based on the pipage rounding technique by Ageev and Sviridenko (2004), and showed that this framework indeed yields a (1 − 1/e)-approximation algorithm for the class of submodular...
متن کاملMaximizing Bisubmodular and k-Submodular Functions
Submodular functions play a key role in combinatorial optimization and in the study of valued constraint satisfaction problems. Recently, there has been interest in the class of bisubmodular functions, which assign values to disjoint pairs of sets. Like submodular functions, bisubmodular functions can be minimized exactly in polynomial time and exhibit the property of diminishing returns common...
متن کاملConstrained Robust Submodular Optimization
In this paper, we consider the problem of constrained maximization of the minimum of a set of submodular functions, in which the goal is to find solutions that are robust to worst-case values of the objective functions. Unfortunately, this problem is both non-submodular and inapproximable. In the case where the submodular functions are monotone, an approximate solution can be found by relaxing ...
